Jairo Beras

It is not a stretch to say that physically Beras looks like a right-handed Nomar Mazara. They have similar power potential, the same open stance, similar size, similarly massive international signing bonuses, and they are each quite young for their respective levels. Before 2015, Beras had yet to show significant promise since signing a huge $4.5 million bonus back in 2012. However, last year he hit .291/.332/.440 with nine homers and nine steals in 350 plate appearances while being 18 months younger than the average player in the South Atlantic League. It’s quite possible that Beras had already been discarded in dynasty leagues after a subpar 2014, or that he had been forgotten about, as he had been relatively quiet in the four years since signing. However, he should be back on everyone’s radar now. It will still be several years before he reaches the majors, but few players in the lower levels can match his power potential. The 6-foot-5 outfielder should head to High-A for his age-20 season.

Beras' pro career finally got started in July, after he served a one-year suspension handed down due to some questions about his birth year when Texas signed him back in 2012. His season didn't last long thanks to a broken bone in his hand, but he did manage to flash some decent pop in limited time in the rookie league (six extra-base hits in 64 at-bats). He was considered the top talent on the international market when he signed back in 2012, so his first full season of pro ball will be worth following. He'll likely head to Low-A Hickory to begin 2014.
