Reaches free agency
PFree Agent
November 14, 2022
Nix (elbow) elected free agency Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Nix hasn't pitched competitively since the 2019 season but should be fully healthy heading into spring training, when he'll be nearly two years removed from the Tommy John surgery he underwent in March 2021. The 26-year-old has previously made nine starts at the MLB level but will likely have to settle for a minor-league deal if he wants to continue his career.

2017 Fantasy Outlook
While Nix does not stand out in a loaded Padres system -- and probably won't even stand out in what will be a historically stacked High-A Lake Elsinore rotation in 2017 -- dynasty league owners need to at least be aware of him heading into his age-21 season. A prep righty who was given an over-slot bonus in the third round of the 2015 draft, Nix boasts a fastball that sits in the mid-90s, and his curveball projects to be at least above average. The development of his changeup will be critical, as he needs something to neutralize lefties, but he is making strides in that department, striking out 53 over 54.1 innings against southpaws last year. At 6-foot-4, 220 pounds, he has an ideal starter's frame, and he has demonstrated advanced control for his age (4.5 percent walk rate). Nix may not be able to match the upside of rotation mates Anderson Espinoza and Cal Quantrill, but he safely projects as a No. 4 starter with the potential to be a No. 3 if he maxes out.
