Rest-of-Season Projections
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Peterson's 430 plate appearances in 2023 were his most since 2015. Unfortunately, the 33-year-old's .611 OPS over that many plate appearances was a drain to fantasy rosters. The season was salvaged by a career-high 15 steals. His plate appearances dried up after being traded to Arizona, a team that needed an everyday third baseman and ranked 27th in OPS from the position. Peterson knows how to work a walk and create chances on the bases, but the bat isn't corner-infielder worthy. He's not going to get a chance to compete for a starting job in 2024, as the Diamondbacks' signed Eugenio Suarez to handle the hot corner. If the D-backs don't address the need for a regular designated hitter, Peterson could be part of that mix, but like corner infield, the bat doesn't profile at DH. Most likely, he'll serve as a backup utility infielder, a left-handed bat off the bench and pinch runner. Read Past Outlooks
Issued release
Peterson was released by the Diamondbacks on Monday, per MLB's transaction log.
ANALYSIS
Peterson was designated for assignment Friday, and he'll hit the open market after failing to draw interest elsewhere. He went 1-for-22 with one RBI and two runs over 14 appearances prior to being released.

Peterson has eclipsed 410 plate appearances just once in his career, but that will very likely change in 2023 with Oakland as the club has signed him to a two-year deal to be their primary third baseman. He has been a role player for Atlanta, New York, Baltimore, and Milwaukee but will now be a middle of the lineup hitter for the beleaguered Athletics. Barring injury, he should set career highs in every counting category and can also bring multi-postional versatility to the table should it be needed. He does not have near the power needed at third base, so he has to make up with volume and speed to close the fantasy gap. If the club does in fact trade Sean Murphy, Peterson could end up being the cleanup hitter for that club which means he could fall into 75 RBIs. There is a good bit of very late round value here because of the guaranteed playing time he has not been afforded since 2015.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Should work at 3B
A's GM David Forst said Peterson should primarily play third base but should still play other positions, according to Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle.
ANALYSIS
Peterson saw most of his action at the hot corner with 79 appearances for the Brewers last year, and he'll fill a similar role for the A's after inking a two-year deal. The 32-year-old also played first base, second base and left field. Oakland also brought aboard Aledmys Diaz, so the team now has a pair of super-utility options.
