Heading to Japan
Blash is signing a contract with the Rakuten Golden Eagles of Nippon Professional Baseball in Japan, Robert Murray of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Blash was with the Angels for 24 games in 2018 and had a .103/.200/.128 slash line in 39 at-bats. The 29-year-old found significant success with Triple-A Salt Lake, however, posting a 188 wRC+ with 29 home runs despite a 29.5 percent strikeout rate. Blash has been unable to translate his minor-league excellence to the majors -- in large part due to his strikeout issues -- so he'll instead test his luck in Japan.

After being traded to the Angels prior to the 2018 campaign, Blash spent the entire season shuttling between Triple-A and the majors. While the 29-year-old dominated in the minors, slashing .317/.431/.700 with 29 homers in 83 games, he failed to translate that success to the majors, hitting just .103/.200/.128 in 24 games (45 plate appearances) for the big club. While Blash walked at an above-average rate (14.2% at Triple-A, 11.1% with the Angels), he also struck out way too much at both stops (29.5% at Triple-A, 53.3% with the Angels). Blash was released in the offseason, and after putting together a disappointing .186/.306/.307 slash line across parts of three big-league seasons (123 games), the outfielder opted to head overseas. He'll test his luck in Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball League with the hope that it will lead to another big-league opportunity down the road.
