ANALYSIS
Desmond opted out of the 2020 and 2021 seasons due to COVID-19 concerns, and he'll elect to hang up his cleats after his $15 million team option for 2022 was declined by the Rockies in November. The 36-year-old spent the first seven years of his career in Washington before joining the Rangers in 2016 and ultimately concluding his career with three seasons in Colorado. In his 11 professional seasons, Desmond slashed .263/.315/.427 with 181 homers, 724 runs, 711 RBI and 181 stolen bases.

Desmond opted out of the 2020 season due to COVID-19 concerns, and his status for 2021 likely hinges on the state of the pandemic when the season gets underway. Assuming he takes the field in his age-35 season, Desmond may have to split time in the outfield. He was on track for a role on the short side of a platoon in 2020 prior to opting out, and he did slash .297/.350/.626 in 198 PAs against LHP in 2019, but it's not yet known how the Rockies will handle the situation in 2021. Additionally, it's unclear what shape Desmond will be in following his year off the field. He's shown some promise in recent years, hitting at least 20 home runs in two of his last three seasons with a .328 wOBA in 2019. However, he'll be fighting for playing time amid a fairly talented group of outfielders in Colorado.
