Signs eight-year KBO deal
Ryu signed an eight-year, $12.4 million contract Wednesday with the Hanwha Eagles of the Korea Baseball Organization, Jee-ho Yoo of the Yonhap News Agency reports.
ANALYSIS
Ryu will turn 37 years old in March, and after signing a long-term deal overseas, his time in the majors is almost assuredly over. Assuming Ryu's deal doesn't contain an early out clause that would allow him to explore opportunities in North America, he'll finish his MLB career with a 3.27 ERA and 1.18 WHIP across 11 seasons spent with the Dodgers and Blue Jays.

Ryu made his long-awaited return from his second career Tommy John surgery at the beginning of August and his results in 11 starts for the Blue Jays down the stretch were more or less what was expected. The 36-year-old southpaw was once capable of striking out around a batter per inning, but he pitches more to contact at this stage of his career. He fanned just 38 over 52 frames in 2023 while averaging a career-low 88.6 mph with his four-seamer. Perhaps due to concerns about Ryu's diminishing stuff, he had a tepid market in free agency over the winter and remained unsigned until February, when he struck a deal with the Hanwha Eagles of the Korea Baseball Organization. Ryu's four-year deal will keep him in the fold with Hanwha through the 2027 season, which likely means his MLB career is over.
