December 21, 2013
Sosa agreed to a minor league contract with the Dodgers, Matt Eddy of Baseball America reports.
ANALYSIS
After struggling with the Astros' Triple-A affiliate in 2012, Sosa spent 2013 in the Korean Professional League. He'll return to the United States as a 28-year-old with limited upside, and his only major league experience came with the dreadful 2011 Astros. Sosa is a long shot to reach the majors at any point in 2014.

Sosa continued his ascent through the minors in 2011 and eventually got the call with the Astros in early August. He throws hard, with his fastball topping out around 96 mph. He'll need to show more consistency if he wants to remain in the Astros' rotation for the whole season, but there is an intriguing power arm here should the Astros decide to move him into the bullpen and give him a look for late-inning duty as their closer role may be up for grabs.
Sosa’s season was cut short last year thanks to a torn teres muscle in his upper back. It was a rehab injury, no surgery, so his long-term outlook didn’t take a huge hit. He was 6-0 with a 2.36 ERA in 14 starts at Double-A Connecticut beforehand, but his 5.5 K/9IP rate was roughly half his previous career average, so hopefully it was the injury to blame. Sosa is still just 24 years old, so there remains plenty of upside, although he’ll have to reestablish himself in the minors in 2010.
Sosa showed flashes at High-A San Jose before getting sidelined by a strained pectoral muscle last year, striking out 58 batters over 56.1 innings as a 22-year-old. Double-A Connecticut should be his next stop, while a late season callup to San Francisco could come in 2009 with a chance to compete for a roster spot in 2010.
