2024 Fantasy Outlook
McGarry reached Triple-A at the end of the 2022 season, but he stalled out in 2023. Not only did he fail to crack the big-league roster at any point, he actually spent far more time at Double-A (13 starts) than he did at Triple-A (three starts). His season took a wrong turn early, as he hit the injured list in early April due to side tightness, and his performances for Double-A Reading upon his return in mid-May explain why he didn't return to the highest level of the minors until late in the year. McGarry has combined great strikeout numbers with far too many walks throughout his minor-league career, and that was the case again with Reading, where he combined a 32.0 K% with a 15.6 BB%. He wasn't punished for those walks nearly as much as he could have been, as he recorded a 3.13 ERA, but Triple-A hitters had no issue with him, as he gave up an almost unbelievable 20 runs in 4.1 innings at that level, striking out five while walking 14. It seems beyond time for the Phillies to move McGarry to the pen at this point, though even in a relief role, his command questions may limit him to low-leverage work. Read Past Outlooks

2023 Fantasy Outlook
McGarry walked more than a batter per inning during his college career, but the Phillies loved his strikeout stuff and bet on his command improving to the point that he was at least playable, with upside for much more if he made an even bigger improvement in that area. Through his first two professional seasons, McGarry has indeed shown enough progress to suggest a big-league future, albeit probably as a reliever. In his 23 career minor-league starts, he owns a 3.05 ERA and an outstanding 37.9 K%, but a 13.4 BB% is an untenable number for a starter. The Phillies had him working in relief in September in Triple-A, seemingly as an audition to help with the team's playoff push, but his 9.00 ERA and 9:9 K:BB failed to earn him that chance. If he remains in relief to start this season, he could debut quite quickly, though presumably in a lower-leverage role. If he's given another chance to start and eventually gets a big-league opportunity, his strikeout prowess will make him a tempting streamer, but the potential for an implosion will be high.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Could debut this year
According to Alex Coffey of The Philadelphia Inquirer, McGarry could make his MLB debut later this year if he continues to show improved command in the minors.
ANALYSIS
The 23-year-old received his first taste of the Triple-A level late last season and walked nine batters across seven relief appearances, and he had a 5.6 BB/9 over 32.2 innings at Double-A Reading prior to the promotion. McGarry missed the start of 2023 with an oblique issue but returned to game action in early May and issued just two free passes in his first three outings, though he's struggled a bit with two walks in each of his past two starts. The right-hander is one of the organization's top prospects and could receive a look over the summer given Philadelphia's issues at the back end of the rotation.
