Sent packing by White Sox
The White Sox released Hernandez earlier this month, Chris Hilburn-Trenkle of Baseball America reports.
ANALYSIS
Hernandez was expected to provide outfield depth at Triple-A Charlotte in 2020, but with the minor-league season facing potential cancelation due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the White Sox have decided to cut bait with the 32-year-old. He previously appeared in 20 big-league games with the Red Sox in 2019, batting .143 over 57 plate appearances.

Hernandez will be in Boston's camp this spring as he signed a minor-league deal with the defending champs in the offseason. The big question is which guy the Red Sox will get: will it be the one that hit .277/.324/.454 with 11 homers in the first half or the guy that hit .162/.220/.286 with four homers after the break? Hernandez enjoyed some serious batted-ball fortune through May and June, launching one of every five flyballs into the seats. That fortune leveled off by mid-summer and returned to his normal career rates for the rest of the season. He has stolen a total of 20 bases over the past two seasons, matching what he did as a minor leaguer in Triple-A for the Giants in 2016. Boston is adding him for potential depth on the roster, but as a righty, he would be a short-side platoon guy and unlikely to see the playing time he saw last year with a downtrodden San Francisco team.
