Past Fantasy Outlooks
2016
2015
Germen bounced around the baseball world in 2015. He began the season toggling between Triple-A and the majors with the Cubs, but was claimed by the Rockies in July. The right-hander spent time both in the majors and in Triple-A after that, and found some success in the relatively short amount of time. His 4.42 ERA looks poor on paper, but most of that damage was done with the Cubs. Despite the improved results, it appears that the Rockies bullpen will be too crowded for Germen to make much of an impact in 2016 unless he can sustain these numbers over a longer period of time.
Germen's second run in the big leagues did not go as well as his 2013 debut, as he was vulnerable to the long ball (2.1 HR/9), and he had very little margin for error to begin with thanks to a walk rate north of 4.0 BB/9. His true talent level in terms of his ability to keep the ball in the park is somewhere in between his first two seasons, as the elevated home run rate last season was accompanied by a jump from 2.4% to 18.4% in his HR/FB. Bouncing around on the fringes of a few 40-man rosters during the offseason, Germen landed with the Cubs as a waiver claim in January. At age 27, he'll likely end up in middle relief if he's able to secure a job, but the Cubs can shuttle him between Triple-A and the big leagues in 2015 as he still has one season of minor league options remaining.
