ANALYSIS
The 32-year-old backstop will head overseas for the first time in his career following a 13-year run in affiliated ball. Pena, who most recently spent the 2021 campaign in the Athletics organization, saw big-league action in parts of four seasons from 2015 through 2018. Across stops with the Royals, Orioles and Cardinals, Pena compiled a .216/.249/.311 slash line and five home runs over 202 plate appearances.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2017
2016
2015
Pena, who had spent the past nine seasons climbing through the minor league ranks, did not figure to see much major league action entering the 2016 season. That was until an injury to the team's backup catcher, Caleb Joseph, opened up a spot on the Orioles' roster. Pena was soon called up to serve as Matt Wieters' backup in Joseph's absence. He saw action in 14 games and certainly did not make the most of his opportunity, posting a .200 average and a grotesque 32.6 percent strikeout rate in his 43 plate appearances. Though it was a small a sample size, his 33 wRC+ was the second worst mark of any of the team's position players. Following the signing of Welington Castillo to take over as the everyday catcher and Wieters' departure in free agency, Joseph should retain the backup duties while Pena lingers at Triple-A as organizational depth. This forecast was further promoted following Pena's designation for assignment in February.
Pena was called up the Royals on September first as one of Kansas City's roster-expansion callups. He came in as the third catcher behind Salvador Perez and Drew Butera. He earned the callup after posting a .251/.305/.430 slash line with 13 home runs over 95 games for the Storm Chasers. Pena appeared in eight games and had just one single in seven plate appearances. The 26-year-old catcher has the ability to hit for power and drive in runs, but there is a good chance that Pena will start the 2016 season in the minors after he was traded to Baltimore.
Pena had a strong season from a power standpoint for Triple-A Omaha in 2014, belting 27 four-baggers, which led to an impressive .275 isolated power mark. For his efforts, he was rewarded with his first taste of big league action as one of Kansas City's September callups, but was ultimately buried behind Salvador Perez and Erik Kratz. A similar siuation faces Pena in the 2015 season, as he'll likely need an injury above him on the depth chart if he's going to see the big leagues prior to September, and even in that case, the 25-year-old would likely still be the backup. Barring a major roster shakeup, Pena is likely once again in line to serve as organizational depth at the Triple-A level this upcoming season.
