Past Fantasy Outlooks
2017
2015
Campbell looked more and more like a Quadruple-A player in 2016 -- too good at Triple-A to be stuck there permanently, but not nearly effective enough against major league pitching to stick around at the top level. Case in point, the 29-year-old hit .301/.390/.447 with a strong 55:41 K:BB in 83 games with Triple-A Las Vegas but just .173/.284/.227 with a 27.3 percent strikeout rate in a 40-game major league sample. A very high BABIP in the minors and a relatively low mark in the majors probably contributed to some of the discrepancies, but it's the second year in a row that he's hit over .300 at Triple-A and below the Mendoza Line in the big leagues. He's versatile enough to play all over the field, but it's a quality that couldn't land him a steady MLB job. He signed to play in Japan in 2017 as a result, though a return to MLB in the future can't be ruled out since he'll be just 30 years old.
Campbell, at age 27, earned his first callup to the majors and hit .263/.322/.358 in 211 plate appearances for the Metropolitans. He struck out much more frequently than he ever did as a minor leaguer and did not draw nearly as many walks as he did throughout the minor leagues. He has never hit for power, but the skills show someone that could fill a nice utility role on a roster and not cripple you at the plate. He is only eligible in the outfield in most leagues on draft day, but if your league uses fewer than 20 games to qualify at a position, he gains eligibility at both first and third. It is in those types of deeper NL-only leagues where he can be taken on draft day. The flexibility and hitting for an empty average are his only redeeming values.
