Cozens announced Tuesday via his personal Twitter account that he has elected to retire from professional baseball in order to pursue opportunities in the NFL.
ANALYSIS
The 27-year-old outfielder's decision to step away from baseball comes after he got off to a slow start to the season at Triple-A Nashville in the Brewers organization, batting just .177 with a 43 percent strikeout rate in 100 plate appearances. Cozens has posted some gaudy home-run totals during his time in the minors since being selected by the Phillies in the second round of the 2012 first-year player draft, but an inability to make consistent contact prevented him from having much staying power in the big leagues -- he appeared in only 27 games with Philadelphia between 2018 and 2019. An excellent athlete who checks in at 6-foot-6 and 245 pounds, Cozens boasts the sort of physical profile that could translate well to football.

Cozens saw his 2019 season limited by a foot injury, and he was only able to appear in 24 total games as a result. He briefly emerged in the big leagues for the Phillies in late-April, failing to come up with a base knock in his lone major-league at-bat. During his time with Triple-A Lehigh Valley, he struggled to a .167 batting average, though he showed some pop by registering six homers and 15 RBI over just 23 contests. The 25-year-old outfielder is best known for his power, popping 27 and 21 homers during the 2017 and 2018 campaigns, respectively. However, strikeouts continue to pose an issue for Cozens, as shown by 42 punchouts in just 78 at-bats during his time with the Iron Pigs in 2019. He agreed to a minor-league contract with Tampa Bay in mid-August and appears on track to begin the 2020 season at Triple-A Durham with the possibility of joining the majors during the year as a bat off the bench.
After spending the better part of two years at Triple-A Lehigh Valley, Cozens was able to make his major-league debut in June, though he posted just a .562 OPS and 24 strikeouts in 44 PA over 26 big-league games. The 24-year-old outfielder had a solid season for the IronPigs with 21 home runs and a .873 OPS in 88 games, but his home/road splits were quite dramatic (1.043 OPS at home and .692 OPS on the road). The main concern for Cozens is strikeouts, as he's posted a 35.7% strikeout rate in 223 games at Lehigh Valley over the last two seasons. Cozens should get a chance to prove himself in spring training, but with the Phillies aiming for the playoffs, he's unlikely to be given much of a leash to iron out any issues if he struggles again in the majors.
Cozens was named the MVP of the Eastern League after hitting .276/.350/.591 with 40 home runs, 38 doubles, 125 RBI and 21 stolen bases for Double-A Reading last season. The numbers, while impressive, have to be taken with a grain of salt given the hitter-friendly park in Reading. Cozens hit 29 of his 40 home runs at home where he also had a 1.118 OPS compared to a .766 OPS on the road. He also struck out 186 times in 134 games and struggled against lefties, hitting just .197 with a .640 OPS in 127 at-bats. The upside with Cozens is immense given his power, but it remains to be seen how he handles advanced pitching. He will certainly need to improve on his 31.7 percent strikeout rate to avoid being a batting average drain if he makes it to the majors. He should get an invitation to spring training with the Phillies this season, but he is likely ticketed for some time in Triple-A early this year.
Cozens, who will turn 20-years-old this season, was the Phillies' second-round pick in 2012. The 6-6, 235-pound outfielder showed some signs of his power potential last season with nine home runs in 245 at-bats for Short-Season Williamsport. There are questions about his ability to stay in the outfield as he continues to mature, so a move to first base could be in his future. Cozens should open the year at Low-A Lakewood, and get his first taste of full-season ball.
