Past Fantasy Outlooks
2018
2017
2016
Garneau has been two different guys over the past three seasons. At Triple-A Albuquerque, he has hit 40 home runs in just under 700 plate appearances and been tough to keep off base. At the major-league level, he has five homers in 277 career plate appearances. Understand, while the park effects at Coors Field are strong, they're stronger in Albuquerque but that is still a rather significant difference in power output. Garneau grades out slightly better than average defensively so he should have a decent chance at sticking around as a second catcher, but needs to make better contact and show that he is more than just another product of friendly minor-league run environments.
In a similar fashion to his 2015 campaign, Garneau spent 2016 hopping between the majors and the minors, and unfortunately for the 29-year-old, the results were also similar. Garneau continued to flash his power in the minor leagues, swatting 15 home runs and posting an excellent .303 ISO with Triple-A Albuquerque, but he failed to bring those successes into the big leagues, as he hit only one home run and saw his ISO plunge to a meager .133 in 75 plate appearances with the Rockies. His strikeout rate also jumped. In fact, his 65 strikeouts between Triple-A and the majors were the most whiffs he put up since his second professional season. There's a good chance that Tom Murphy and defensive whiz Tony Wolters will split catching duties to start the year, likely leaving Garneau to continue riding the shuttle for much of 2017.
Not regarded highly as a prospect, Garneau was given the opportunity to play in the majors thanks to injuries to both Nick Hundley and highly-regarded prospect Tom Murphy. The 28-year-old only logged 76 plate appearances, but his slash line was underwhelming nonetheless. His power is intriguing, given his 15 home runs and .810 OPS at Triple-A Albuquerque, but Garneau will struggle to see time in the majors with Hundley and Murphy returning from their injuries.
