2024 Fantasy Outlook
Less than a calendar year ago, many analysts thought Jones vs. Jackson Holliday was either advantage Jones or a toss up. The Orioles nailed the first-overall pick in 2022 by taking Holliday, while the rest of the teams picking in the top six likely have some level of regret. The Diamondbacks selected Jones with the No. 2 overall pick and he has been either injured or unproductive for the majority of his career to date. He needed shoulder surgery shortly after getting drafted and slashed .238/.353/.327 with two home runs, nine steals, a 26 percent strikeout rate and a 15 percent walk rate in 41 games across the Arizona Complex League and Single-A as a 19-year-old. His speed, athleticism and elite defense are likely going to get him to the big leagues, but there are significant concerns about his swing mechanics. He makes decent swing decisions, but he rarely impacted the ball. Jones has elite pedigree and looks like a prime post-hype breakout candidate on paper, but there's no denying he was well below expectations in 2023. Read Past Outlooks

Overmatched early this season

Jones is slashing .247/.357/.366 with one home run, two steals and a 37.2 percent strikeout rate in 27 games for Single-A Visalia.
ANALYSIS
Jones' contact rate is below 55 percent and his BABIP is .423, so his slash line is due for negative regression. It's troubling that Jones has only three homers in 240 career at-bats, but it's much more concerning that he appears overmatched against Single-A pitchers as a 20-year-old.

2023 Fantasy Outlook
For most evaluators, Jones was the best prep position player to come along in years, comparing favorably to the likes of Bobby Witt and Byron Buxton when they were amateurs. The Orioles opted for Jackson Holliday at 1-1 due to him being a lefty-hitting shortstop, and the Diamondbacks jumped on Jones with the second-overall pick in the 2022 draft. Jones is the son of legendary center fielder Andruw Jones, so it should come as no surprise that he is bursting with tools and projects to be an excellent defensive center fielder. His scouting report is littered with 60's and 70's, and he has one of the most projectable frames an 18-year-old baseball player can have, measuring in at 6-foot-4, 180 pounds. Jones could add 20 pounds of muscle and still maintain his explosive athleticism. His high-end speed, defense and throwing arm are not up for debate, and his approach and hit tool are more advanced than the average top-five pick from the high school ranks. He projects for at least above-average power, and it's possible all his fantasy-relevant tools will be plus or better when he reaches the majors. Unfortunately, Jones needed labrum surgery in August, so he won't make his pro debut until 2023. However, we have to look no further than his org. mates Corbin Carroll and Jordan Lawlar to find examples of premium prospects who rebounded in a major way from untimely surgeries early in their careers.
