VerHagen was the first major-league signing after the end of the lockout, and he's back in affiliated ball after a two-year stint in Japan. The 32-year-old made 22 appearances for the Tigers in 2019 before heading overseas and had a 5.90 ERA over 58 innings while working mostly as a reliever. VerHagen posted a 3.49 ERA and and 216:62 K:BB across 208.2 frames during his two years in Japan to help pave his way back to MLB, and he could take a spot in the back of the Cardinals' starting rotation in 2022.

He will be out until at least July 9 but could be on the shelf longer if it is serious enough to require surgery. The 31-year-old allowed 10 runs, nine earned, in his last 5.2 innings before going on the IL.
