Undergoes Tommy John surgery
Smith underwent Tommy John ligament construction surgery Friday, which included an internal brace procedure, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Per DiComo, the procedure was a "full-blown Tommy John ligament reconstruction," which means Smith will likely be sidelined for 12-to-18 months. With that in mind, the reliever -- who previously underwent Tommy John surgery in the spring of 2019 -- will likely miss at least half of next season and may not pitch again until 2026. He's slated to be a free agent in November.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Working with new cutter
Smith has begun using a low-90s cutter this season, reports Anthony DiComo of MLB.com.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander already featured a diverse repertoire but can now go six pitches deep with the new addition. Smith had a bit of a down season in 2023 with a 4.15 ERA and 1.40 WHIP over 56.1 innings, but through eight appearances this year he's given up just one earned run and struck out 10. However, he's also issued five walks and has a 1.32 WHIP, and he'll likely need to cut down on the free passes in order to maintain the elite run prevention rate.
