Donn Roach

The Cubs claimed Roach off of waivers in November, as the Padres simply couldn't justify keeping him on their 40-man roster with more talented young players to protect from the Rule 5 Draft. Roach made 16 appearances in the big leagues last season -- including one start -- but did little to make an impression, carrying a walk rate (4.5 BB/9) that too closely resembled his strikeout rate (5.0 K/9). After showing an ability to miss bats in the California League in 2012 (8.5 K/9), he's been much more hittable against better competition. Roach showed control gains at Double-A in 2013, but failed to sustain the improvement with the bump up to the Pacific Coast League. At age 25, his days as a starter may be nearing an end, but Roach has shown an ability to induce a lot of his outs on the ground, which could allow him to carve out a middle-relief role.
