Struggling in Appy League
Perez, 18, is hitting .162/.295/.216 with one extra-base hit (a triple) and two steals on three attempts in 37 at-bats in the Appalachian League.
ANALYSIS
He posted a .745 OPS in the Gulf Coast League last year, but is struggling to get hits in the early going in the more advanced rookie league. His .231 BABIP is a big reason for his poor slash line, and his 8:6 K:BB is very encouraging.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2018
2017
A high-pedigree shortstop with a prototypical 6-foot-3, 175-pound teenage frame, Perez made sense as an upside play when he fell to the Cardinals with the 23rd overall pick in 2016, even with a positive PED test before the draft. He also made sense as an investment in dynasty leagues last offseason, as power/speed prep shortstops are a rare breed. However, in 34 games last season at age-appropriate rookie levels, he was pretty awful, particularly after a promotion to the more advanced Appalachian League. Perez has also had a hard time staying on the field, as he missed time in 2016 with a leg injury, while a broken hand ended his 2017 season. There is no reason to continue holding him in most dynasty formats, as there is a never-ending stream of rookie-league hitters with upside and major hit tool concerns. Just make sure to keep him on watch lists, because if he starts to hit, his plus speed and power projection would warrant ownership in most dynasty leagues.
