2025 Fantasy Outlook
Silseth broke camp as a member of the Angels' rotation, but he wound up making just two starts for them and only seven more in the minors in 2024 due to an elbow problem which eventually required surgery. The operation was considered minor and isn't expected to affect his readiness for the start of 2025. Silseth has a couple bat-missing secondary pitches in his sweeper and splitter and has posted a solid 23.7 percent strikeout rate during his time in the big leagues. However, he's also issued free passes at a 10.8 percent clip and he's reached 100 innings just once in pro ball (111.2, in 2022). Silseth turns just 25 in May and has more upside than some of the other rotation depth options for the Angels, but he currently looks to be pretty far down in the pecking order. Read Past Outlooks

Elbow
December 9, 2024
Angels general manager Perry Minasian said Monday that Silseth (elbow) will be stretched out to start during spring training, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Silseth had right elbow surgery in early August, although it seems it was a minor procedure and he should be at or close to 100 percent for the start of spring training. Seventeen of Silseth's 25 appearances at the big-league level have been starts, but he was limited to just 43.1 innings between the majors and minors in 2024 due to injury and could shift to relief, if needed.

Stat Review
How does Chase Silseth compare to other starting pitchers?
This section compares his stats with all starting pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 120 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 120 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
2022
Silseth continues to tease with his fantasy potential around issues both in and out of his control. The highlights of his 2023 season include a 12-strikeout performance against the Mariners in early August and a 10-strikeout performance against the Yankees in late July while his lowlights include getting chased before the fourth inning with 4+ earned runs against both the Orioles and Rays along with being concussed by an errant throw during a rundown in a start against the Mets in late August. Between Salt Lake and Anaheim, Silteth worked 98 innings with 104 strikeouts, 46 walks, and 10 homers despite his groundball tilt. Both his slider and splitter generated whiffs a third of the time, but his fastball is average at best yet he throws it over half the time because he falls behind in the count more than he should. Better execution and command would allow Silseth to take a nice step forward in 2024 as long as his body holds up.
The combination of the Angels wanting to stick with a six-man rotation and Silseth dominating at Double-A Rochester earned the young righthander seven starts in The Show. Silseth was underwhelming as his 9.3% K-BB and seven homers allowed in 28.2 innings indicates. Silseth throws five pitches, relying mostly on a four-seam fastball, splitter and slider while occasionally mixing in a sinker and curve. There is an adequate velocity delta between his pitches to keep batters off balance, but he needs to exhibit the same control and command shown in the minors. Silseth will likely be given a chance to win a rotation spot in the spring, but he's more likely to begin the season in Triple-A, a level in which he's yet to pitch. Despite his struggles at the major league level, Silseth is in play as a speculative starter in draft and hold formats.
It's not often we see a pitcher called up with fewer than 35 innings of minor-league experience, but that's exactly what happened with Silseth this season. An 11th-round pick last June, Silseth became the first player from the 2021 draft class to reach the majors when his contract was selected by the Angels in mid-May. He was dominating at Double-A Rocket City to begin the year, fanning 37 in 26 innings to earn the aggressive promotion. The 22-year-old right-hander has more than held his own through two big-league starts, with his split-finger pitch and slider in particular showing good swing-and-miss potential. Silseth is one of the biggest pop-up prospects of the year so far, especially on the pitching side, and he's already on the streaming radar in mixed leagues despite the ultra-thin professional track record.

Throwing new cutter
PLos Angeles Angels  AAA
March 1, 2023
Silseth is throwing a new cutter this spring, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com.
ANALYSIS
Silseth noted that he threw his new pitch 14-15 times during Wednesday's Cactus League outing versus the Brewers and got three strikeouts with it. Left-handed batters posted a whopping 1.117 OPS off Silseth in his seven starts for the Angels last season, and he's hoping the cutter will help combat that. He's competing for the sixth spot in the Angels' rotation.
