While clearly showing signs of decline, Phillips had still hit .285 or better in the three seasons prior to 2018 while posting double-digit totals in home runs and stolen bases. However, a tough free-agent market kept Phillips jobless until late June, when he ultimately signed a minor-league contract with the Red Sox. He didn't get an opportunity with the big-league club until September, and he went 3-for-23 in a mere nine games played. His hitting numbers were fine in Triple-A, so it seems like he still has something left in the tank. That said, it's no secret that his best days are behind him, and unless he has better luck finding a job this offseason, it's tough to expect much from him in 2019.
