No plans to play
Zobrist hasn't officially announced his retirement but has no plans to play this season, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports.
ANALYSIS
If this is indeed the end for the 38-year-old, Zobrist will call it quits after a 14-year career in which he won two World Series rings. He grabbed his first with the Royals in 2015 and helped the Cubs break their drought the following season, winning the World Series MVP in the latter year. Zobrist's career line includes 167 homers, 116 steals, 1,566 hits and a .266/.357/.426 slash line.

In an unusual situation, Zobrist wound up missing the majority of the 2019 season while going through a divorce. He played in just 47 games and didn't look like his usual self, posting a .260/.358/.313 slash line. The sample was certainly small, but there are not many reasons to be excited about a soon-to-be 39-year-old coming off poor seasons in two of his last three campaigns. His defensive versatility should be enough to earn him at least a bench spot should he elect to continue playing, but he may not deserve much more than that. He can still take a walk, helping his value in OBP leagues, but his already mediocre power fell off hard last season. In the right situation, Zobrist would still deserve deep-league consideration, but he's unlikely to provide much category juice even if he gets the playing time and hits.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Uncertain about future in baseball
Zobrist has yet to decide whether he'll attempt to play in 2020 or retire from professional baseball, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Zobrist endured a trying year from both a personal and baseball standpoint in 2019, appearing in just 47 games at the MLB level and supplying a middling .671 OPS. Now 38 years old, Zobrist no longer offers as much defensive flexibility these days -- he only saw more than 10 innings of action at second base and the corner-outfield spots in 2019 -- which eliminates much of the versatility that had once been his calling card. If Zobrist elects to keep playing, he might have to settle for a minor-league contract or a one-year deal that contains little guaranteed money.
