Rowen landed in the Brewers organization after being claimed off waivers from the Blue Jays, but his results with his new team were less than ideal. His struggles in a small sample size made the Brewers comfortable enough to outright him off the 40-man roster after the season. He's had enough success in the minors that a return to the majors isn't out of the question, as he posted a 2.33 ERA in 58 Triple-A innings between Toronto's Buffalo and Milwaukee's at Colorado Springs. All told, the 28-year-old has a 1.85 career ERA in the minors and 6.94 mark in the big leagues. He has an invite to Mets spring training for 2017, and given the way this organization can churn out useful hurlers, he could find himself useful in fantasy games for a stint.
Rowen bounced around quite a bit last year, but ended with strong numbers across the board. He spent the spring in the Dodgers' organization, but was traded to the Orioles just prior to Opening Day. After starting at Double-A Bowie, Rowen was bumped up to Triple-A Norfolk, only to be sent back down shortly thereafter. From there, Rowen ended up at Triple-A Iowa after being released by the Orioles and didn't concede an earned run in 9.1 innings, earning a call up to the big club. However, Rowen was designated for assignment days later and did not even make an appearance. The Blue Jays claimed Rowen off waivers in August when the Cubs tried to sneak him off the 40-man roster. His sidearm delivery and ability to induce groundballs makes him a logical fit for the hitter-friendly Rogers Centre, but any kind of significant role seems unlikely.
Rowen is a submarine right-hander who debuted with the Rangers in 2014 and made eight appearances following a callup in June. The sample size is too small to offer up much about his ability to handle big league hitters, but Rowen's groundball rate during his time with Texas (59.3%) was actually lower than his 64.5% career rate in the minors. He doesn't throw particularly hard, and Rowen's ability to miss bats hinges more on deception than stuff. The Rangers still have the luxury of sending him back to Triple-A, making it unlikely that he'll begin the season with a role in the big-league bullpen, but it would hardly be surprising to see him log more innings in Texas in 2015.
