2025 Projections
Parts ways with Royals
The Royals released Russell on July 22.
ANALYSIS
After he hadn't pitched in affiliated ball since 2016 due to multiple injuries along with a self-imposed exile from baseball, Russell returned to action in July for the Royals' rookie-level Arizona Complex League affiliate. Unfortunately for the 2015 first-round pick, the 24-year-old Russell did little to show he was ready to make good on his pedigree. Over four appearances in the ACL, Russell worked four innings and gave up three earned runs on two hits and eight walks. If Russell wants to keep his career going, he may have to do so in the independent ranks.

2016 Fantasy Outlook
Russell did not do much to impress in his first taste of pro ball in 2015, but after the Royals traded most of their top pitching prospects last summer in an effort to win now, he will enter 2016 as a top-10 prospect in their farm system. Kansas City selected the 6-foot-4 prep righty with the 21st pick last year in a relatively weak draft class. He boasts an electric fastball and a slider, both of which have the potential to be plus offerings in time. Developing a changeup will be a key step in his development as a starting pitcher, but he could certainly make it as a reliever if that proves futile. Russell posted a 4.21 ERA with a 24:13 K:BB in 36.1 innings in rookie ball, suggesting he may not be quite ready for a full-season assignment. There is no need to roster the 19-year-old hurler just yet in most dynasty formats, but he has the stuff and the pedigree to make a jump up prospect lists with a strong 2016 campaign.
