ANALYSIS
With 149 career major-league appearances, Caminero was one of the more seasoned relievers vying for a bullpen gig at big-league camp. After spending the past two seasons in Japan before inking a minor-league deal with the Mets over the winter, Caminero struggled to make an impression this spring. He was lit up for seven runs (six earned) on six hits and two walks over 3.1 innings across four appearances.

Caminero's blazing fastball seems suited for the late innings, but his other metrics say otherwise. Over the first couple months of the season, the right-hander gave up 11 runs (10 earned) on 23 hits while walking as many batters as he struck out in his 16.1 innings of work. He raised his stock during the summer months by posting a 2.28 ERA, which led the Pirates to sell high and ship him off to the Mariners in August. Unfortunately, the 29-year-old reverted back to his old ways upon the switch to the Junior Circuit, as his BB/9 climbed to 5.0 while serving up three home runs in just 19.2 innings, helping his ERA and WHIP to rise to 3.66 and 1.63, respectively. Caminero could develop into a late-inning reliever given his lively heater, but he'll be relegated to middle relief until he can display an ability to command his offerings and keep the ball in the park. He signed to play in Japan in 2017, but at age 30 next year could return to play in MLB at some point.
Armed with the third-hardest fastball (97.9 mph) in the majors, Caminero saw his most extensive big league action in 2015, compiling a 3.62 ERA and 1.23 WHIP in 74.2 innings. Initially, it appeared as if the right-hander might be groomed for a closing role, but his fastball showed little movement and he walked too many batters (3.5 BB/9). The Marlins gave up on the flame thrower after nine minor-league seasons, but if Pirates pitching coach Ray Searage can improve upon his consistency, then fantasy owners will want to keep close tabs on Caminero. The 28-year-old collected five wins and 15 holds for Pittsburgh, primarily as a seventh-inning pitcher.
Caminero spent just 6.2 ineffective innings with the Marlins in 2014, but the 6-foot-4, 250-pound right-hander was able to flash elite strikeout ability throughout the year, striking out 87 batters in just 69.2 innings pitched between the majors and the minors. Walks continue to be a problem for the 27-year-old reliever and Caminero issued 34 free passes (4.4 BB/9) during the previous season. Caminero works with a mid-90s heater that can run up near triple digits from time-to-time, mixing in both a changeup and a slow curve to induce plenty of swings-and-misses, but he has been susceptible to the long ball throughout his career. Caminero racked up double-digit saves for Triple-A New Orleans last year and will have a chance to compete for a spot in the Marlins' bullpen in 2015.
Caminero got his first taste of major league action in September, and he fared well, allowing just four earned runs over 13 innings out of the Marlins' bullpen. The 6-foot-4, 255-pound reliever showed improved control in 2013, posting a 3.5 BB/9 over 54.1 innings between Double-A and Triple-A before walking just three batters in his limited time in the majors. Caminero's strikeout ability -- 81 punchouts in 67.1 total innings between the majors and minors in 2013 -- will play well at the back end of the Miami bullpen. Caminero's mid-90s fastball, which touches 98 mph at times, could land him in the mix for saves at some point during his career.
Caminero pitched just 38.1 innings across two levels in 2012, but he continues to show promise as a hard-throwing bullpen arm. The 25-year-old flame-thrower regularly hits 98 mph on the gun and has a 10.8 K/9 over seven minor league seasons. His command took a slight step back in 2012, as Caminero posted a 2.3 K/BB ratio after missing most of the 2011 season. Still, Caminero's overall numbers in 2012 include a 1.64 ERA and 1.23 WHIP between High-A Jupiter and Double-A Jacksonville. His raw stuff will likely earn him a look with the Marlins in spring training. With improved control, the righty could be a solid piece in the Miami bullpen.
