Contemplating retirement
Eaton is considering retiring as a player and making a move into coaching, with the Angels having met with him regarding a possible position on the team's staff before the lockout began Dec. 1, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
If Eaton is still eager to continue his playing career, he'll more than likely have to accept a minor-league deal after both the White Sox and Angels cast him off their 40-man rosters last season, when the 33-year-old outfielder managed a lowly .201/.282/.327 slash line over 288 plate appearances. Though he mostly stayed healthy in 2021, multiple injuries suffered in prior years appear to have caught up with Eaton, who no longer profiles as a plus runner and has seen his on-base and contact skills diminish. The Angels aren't able to finalize a contract with Eaton to join their coaching staff during the ongoing work stoppage, but once the lockout ends, expect the two sides to revisit those discussions. Eaton will also presumably stay engaged with any teams who are willing to offer him the chance to compete for a spot on an Opening Day roster.

Eaton showed signs of decline in 2019. His drop-off in 2020 was severe, however, as he finished with a .226/.285/.384 line in 41 games. Still just 32 years old, he shouldn't be collapsing quite yet (though his extended injury history makes that more of a possibility). The White Sox will certainly be hoping that was just a blip, as they brought him back on a one-year deal, lining him up as the team's primary right fielder. There are reasons to believe Eaton still has something in the tank, as his 38.2% hard-hit rate was actually a personal Statcast-era high, though it came with a 5.7-degree launch angle and an unimpressive .248 xBA. The upside here is modest, as he's never reached 20 homers or steals, so don't take him at a spot where you can't afford to cut bait if 2020 was the beginning of the end.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Option may be declined
Eaton may have his option declined by the Nationals, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The Nationals hold a club option worth $10.5 million for the 2021 season with a $1.5 million buyout. While still relatively affordable, Zuckerman notes that the team must now determine whether Eaton's decline in 2020 was the product of a small sample or signs of a loss of skill. Overall, it was speculated that the team may prefer a more powerful bat in its outfield, meaning Eaton could be looking for a new team in 2021.
