Barria agreed in principle to a deal with the Hanwha Eagles of the Korea Baseball Organization over the weekend and is expected to finalize a contract in the coming days, Kim Geun-han of MKSports.co.kr reports.
ANALYSIS
For the time being, Barria remains under contract with the Guardians on a minor-league deal, but Triple-A Columbus placed him on its development list Friday in anticipation of him signing overseas. The 27-year-old right-hander made 34 appearances (six starts) for the Angels in 2023 but has worked exclusively with Columbus in 2024 after failing to win a big-league roster spot with the Guardians coming out of spring training. In 13 outings for Columbus spanning 24.1 innings, Barria has delivered a 4.81 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 27:6 K:BB.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2021
2020
2019
Barria is an intriguing pitcher, if only for the turnaround he put together in 2020 in the amount he did pitch. Barria closed the 2019 season with many of his indicators in the bottom 10th percentile of the league as hitters had little trouble squaring him up and sending rockets all over the field to the tune of a 6.42 ERA, .274 opponents' average and a 1.44 WHIP. Last season in seven games, he lowered those numbers to 3.62, .221, and 1.11, respectively. Barria took many of those same bad 2019 expected measures from the bottom 10th percentile to the top 10th percentile last season despite the fact he won't light up any radar guns. He effectively pairs his slider and fastball while mixing in changeups and sinkers to keep hitters off balance. Statcast says he most closely aligns to Masahiro Tanaka and Jake Odorizzi based on velocity and movement, yet will come much cheaper on draft day than those two.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Sixth starter will be swingman
Barria could have a leg up to be the Angels' sixth starter with manager Phil Nevin telling Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register on Tuesday that the team's sixth starter will be a swingman.
ANALYSIS
The Angels won't have a traditional six-man rotation in 2023 as they've had in recent years, as they plan to use a sixth starter only when there are no off days on the schedule during a particular stretch. Being a swingman is essentially the role Barria has filled since he reached the majors, although just one of his appearances in 2022 was as a starter. Also in the mix for the sixth starter/swingman role is Tucker Davidson -- who is out of options -- Griffin Canning and Chris Rodriguez.
