Rest-of-Season Projections
Released by Oakland
Lambo was released by the Athletics on Sunday, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports.
ANALYSIS
Lambo had been on the disabled list with a wrist injury but was recently cleared to play. After he was given the go-ahead to return, Oakland opted to part ways with the 28-year-old. Lambo, who owns a career major-league batting average of just .189, will likely provide organizational depth if a team decides to sign him.

It seems like Lambo's been around forever, but he's still only 26 years of age. Pittsburgh gifted him a starting spot at first base in 2014 but he blew it with a terrible spring training. No matter how well Lambo then batted for Triple-A Indianapolis -- .328/.389/.563 with 11 homers and 42 RBI in 238 at-bats -- the Pirates seemed intent on keeping him buried in the minors while playing lesser talents in the majors. Thumb surgery interrupted his campaign, but a late-August run of six homers in seven games proved he was physically fine. When the Bucs finally called him up in September, he did little more than pinch-hit. He's got plenty of pop, but the Pirates aren't comfortable using him at first base and don't need him in the outfield. His time with Pittsburgh might be drawing to a close.

Looking strong as camp opens
Lambo, who is fully recovered from 2016 testicular cancer surgery, has made a positive first impression as he starts workouts as a non-roster invitee Jane Lee of MLB.com reports. "He looks like he's in good shape," A's manager Bob Melvin said. "God bless him. He's here, he's healthy. I know he's excited. He's always a very vocal guy, and I'm not trying to speak for him, but whenever you go through something like that that's bigger than baseball, when you get back to doing what you love to do, there's a certain amount of passion that goes along with it."
