Barney was announced Thursday as the manager for the Rangers' Triple-A affiliate in Nashville.
ANALYSIS
Barney had been out of baseball since being released by Texas in spring training in 2018, so the move to coaching signals the end of his playing career. Known primarily for his defensive abilities, Barney won his lone Gold Glove award in 2012 and slashed .246/.294/.341 across 814 games between the Cubs, Dodgers and Blue Jays.

Barney's glove continues to keep him around at the big-league level, but for how much longer is a real question. He still graded out as a net positive in the field in 2017, but not to the same extent as 2016, and not nearly to the level he was at during his peak years with the Cubs from 2012-13. Barney has always been a light-hitting infielder, with his ISO ranging from .078 to .104 in his full seasons. His wOBA has never exceeded .303 in any season with more than 250 plate appearances. The Blue Jays brought in Aledmys Diaz this winter in a trade with St. Louis, making a return to Toronto unlikely for Barney. Chances are, he will settle for a minor-league deal in free agency with a chance to work his way into a utility role in spring training.
Barney barely made the 25-man roster in 2016, and was expected to be sent to the minors once Devon Travis returned from offseason surgery. In a twist of fate, Ryan Goins -- who was ahead of Barney on the depth chart -- struggled immensely to begin the campaign. That opened the door for Barney to fill a regular role for a short period before the All-Star break. The utility man saw time at second, third, short (reaching 20 games at all three positions) and even in the outfield. Prior to the Midsummer Classic, the 28-year-old slashed .296/.345/.392, well above his career marks across the board. Barney's second-half production (.215/.279/.333) fell way short of his first-half success, but his overall campaign increased his standing with the team heading into 2017. Although his numbers won't blow anyone away, Barney's versatility at least lends itself reasonably well to volume.
Barney finally evolved in 2014 into what he should have been the entire time -- a role player. He's a glove-first player that has never run, hit for average or hit for power at the major league level. Barney ended up with the Dodgers after leaving Chicago and actually scattered some hits around when matchups were in his favor. However, 29-year-old glove-first players have one role in fantasy circles: occupying spots in the FA pool. His career-high in runs is 73, and that came in a season where he had nearly 600 plate appearances. Even if Barney were to go back to 500-plus plate appearances, there isn't much he is going to do with them.
No one can deny that Barney has a great glove, but the 2012 Gold Glove winner can't hit a lick. Seven home runs and four stolen bases might be acceptable for a $1 second baseman who hit .270 in 200 at-bats, but Barney received over 500 at-bats in 2013 and barely stayed above the Mendoza Line. His .569 OPS was ahead of only Adeiny Hechavarria among qualifiers in the National League. His defense may save a few runs for the Cubs, but it's his bat that keeps the Cubs' games low-scoring. You're better off finding a part-timer to fill your middle-infield spot, and if he doesn't start hitting a little better, the Cubs may start to look elsewhere as well.
A .254/.299/.354 line doesn't pay the bills except when it comes from an elite defensive second baseman - and that's a fair description for Barney whose 13.1 UZR led MLB at his position. That defensive skill set will keep his bat in the lineup, and the volume should yield decent counting stats in deeper leagues - seven homers, six steals and 73 runs have some use. Barney turned 27 in November, and given his strong contact rate and improving batting eye, it should not surprise if he hits .275 or higher.
A long shot to win the second-base job last year, Barney beat out Jeff Baker and Blake DeWitt to be the Cubs' everyday starter as a rookie. His .276/.313/.353 line isn't eye-popping, however, and Barney has never run all that much - nine steals in 529 at-bats last year, and 11 in 479 Triple-A at-bats in 2010. Moreover, Barney doesn't hit for power or draw walks. He is an excellent contact hitter, though, and his defense makes him the favorite the begin the season as the team's starter. At 26, Barney can still get better, but he's probably not a high ceiling player.
Barney got a cup of coffee in September and didn't hit. He can play second, short and third, and he runs well (though he hasn't translated his raw speed into base-stealing ability), so he'll be considered for a utility role. Otherwise, his skill set - not much power or patience, good contact skills - doesn't jump out.
