Middlebrooks was part of the flurry of moves GM A.J Preller made in his first full offseason on the job as San Diego's GM, and like most of the Padres, Middlebrooks failed to live up to expectations. There was some hope that a change of scenery could get Middlebrooks out of the funk that hung over his last two seasons in Boston, but he was unable to get things turned around with the Padres and was ultimately sent down to Triple-A El Paso shortly after the All Star break, failing to make it back up to the majors. He batted .215/.242/.367 with nine home runs and 29 RBI over the first half of the season while serving as the Padres' primary third baseman. Eight of his nine home runs came on the road as he failed to generate much at the plate at Petco Park. Middlebrooks signed with the Brewers in the offseason and despite his struggles could compete for Milwaukee's third base job.
