The Tigers reassigned Strieby to minor-league camp Monday, Mlive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The 26-year-old first baseman has shook off injury problems to once again be considered a decent hitting prospect in the Tigers' system. With Prince Fielder manning first, Strieby remains blocked by a superstar. His best chance to spend time in the majors is a moving to outfield or a trade.

After back-to-back injury-plagued seasons, Strieby was able to stay healthy and log a full season with Triple-A Toledo in 2011. He finished the year hitting .255/.341/.429 with 19 homers and 76 RBI in 487 at-bats. Strieby struggled with his plate discipline, leading the International League with 171 strikeouts. Despite the promising displays of power throughout his minor league career, Strieby doesn’t appear close to making a splash with the Tigers because he plays first base, which is manned by Miguel Cabrera. In fact, Detroit removed Strieby from the 40-man roster this offseason, furthering the point he’s not a serious option in the short term. For Strieby to get another look with the Tigers, he’ll have to cut down on his whiffs and prove he can play in the outfield on a consistent basis.
Strieby emerged as a prospect to watch after back-to-back solid seasons in 2008 and 2009, but he failed to impress while plodding through an injury-filled campaign with Triple-A Toledo last year. He dealt with a troublesome wrist nearly all season, finishing with a disappointing .245/.323/.400 line in 325 at-bats. The big (6-foot-5, 235-pound) slugger remains one of the better hitting prospects in the Tigers' farm system, but he'll spend another season in the minors getting healthy and adjusting to his new position in left field before receiving a legit shot in Motown.
Strieby is one of the more underrated prospects in all of baseball. The big lefty (6-4, 235) hit .303 with 19 homers and 58 RBI in just 86 games with Double-A Erie in 2009. With Miguel Cabrera blocking his path at first base, the Tigers have started to give Strieby playing time in the outfield to quicken his arrival to the majors. Power is his calling card, and if he shows strides on defense, he could see time with the Tigers before the end of the season.
Strieby, a fourth-round pick in 2006, has displayed some big-time power but scouts say his swing can get long, and some are skeptical about how he will perform once he reaches Double-A. He's never going to be a big batting average guy, though he does maintain a good walk rate. A big year at Double-A could have him rocket up the prospect charts.
