Rest-of-Season Projections
Gamel (knee) signed a minor league contract with the Yankees earlier this week, Matt Eddy of Baseball America reports.
ANALYSIS
Gamel has seen his career bottom out since emerging as a top prospect in the Brewers' system following a massive 2011 campaign at Triple-A Nashville, during which he slashed .310/.372/.540 with 28 homers. However, he never received much of a chance to test his game in the majors, as he lost back-to-back seasons due to ACL tears and was released by the Braves last spring after suffering a setback in his recovery. At this point, the 29-year-old's hopes of reaching the majors again appear to be slim, but he could provide the Yankees with some quality organizational depth at the Triple-A level.

Gamel was poised to open the season as the Brewers' starting first baseman before he reinjured the same knee that required surgery in 2012, ending his season in spring training. The 28-year-old was a former top-hitting prospect for the Brewers and batted an impressive .310/.372/.540 at Triple-A Nashville as recently as the 2011 season, so if his knee is healthy by the time spring training rolls around, he could prove to be a useful bat at least in a bench role. The Braves are taking a look at Gamel after signing him to a minor league deal in December.
