The Astros rescued the deceptively young Martinez (he's still just 24) from the Mets, and watched him put together a pretty nice season at Triple-A. Martinez's .314/.367/.507 line was one of the best he has ever delivered as a professional, and although he struggled a bit with the Astros, he did not look overmatched. The Astros generally prevented Martinez from hitting against lefties, and history proves that this is the right decision. Houston clearly needs run production from their outfield, but the jury is still out on whether someone like Martinez can be that guy consistently driving in 85-plus runs. Nevertheless, Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow gave Martinez a vote of confidence, labeling him a "core player" for 2013. The days of Martinez stealing bases are likely gone forever, but if his newly found power sticks, he could emerge as a viable option in Houston.
