Announces retirement
Werth (hamstring) told Jon Heyman of Fancred Sports that his career has come to an end, officially retiring from professional baseball.
ANALYSIS
Werth announced his retirement while on the 7-day disabled list with Triple-A Tacoma. He stated to Heyman that he knew his career was over when he walked off the field for the last time against Nashville on June 8. The veteran outfielder had been hitting just .206 with a .686 OPS in 36 games for the Rainiers this season. Over the course of his major-league career, Werth slashed .267/.360/.455 with 229 home runs and 799 RBI across 1,583 games and helped the Phillies win the World Series in 2008.

For the second time in the last three seasons, Werth lost a significant portion of the year to injuries, as he's played in 301 of a possible 486 regular season games for the Nats since the start of 2015. This time, a pitch fouled off his foot in June led to a 60-day DL stint thanks to a bone bruise and a fracture. In the 70 games he played, Werth was largely the same player he's been for the final three years of his contract in Washington, hitting .226/.322/.393, and offering pro-rated 20-homer pop. Most of his success in 2017 came against left-handed pitching, as he walked (16.4 percent) nearly as much as he struck out (18.2 percent) while carrying a respectable .239/.364/.457 line. A 38-year-old free agent, Werth's days as a regular are likely over, and it's entirely possible that he'll opt for retirement instead of attempting to push through another season as a part-time player.
