Rest-of-Season Projections
Fuentes has decided to retire, MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Fuentes is a four-time All-Star, having led the majors with 48 saves in 2009, and finishing his career with a 3.62 ERA. The 37-year-old lefty told his hometown newspaper Wednesday that he's retiring after 12 seasons. "I've had a great career," Fuentes said. "I never dreamed I'd have the opportunities or some of the success that I've had." He left the Cardinals after only six appearances for the club last season, as he was having trouble being so far away from his family.

Fuentes briefly ascended to the A's closer role with an early season injury to Andrew Bailey, racking up five saves before April 13, but butted heads with then-manager Bob Geren in late May over his usage patterns and was a forgotten man in the A's bullpen for nearly two months (recording a lone hold and no saves between June 20 and August 7). He re-emerged a bit in September, picking up three holds, and his post-break numbers (21 innings, 15 hits, 13:4 K:BB, 1.71 ERA, 0.905 WHIP) were markedly better than his first half numbers. Following the decision to trade Bailey to Boston, Oakland could look to Fuentes again in the closer's role, but he'll face competition from Grant Balfour, Joey Devine and Fautino De Los Santos for the job during spring training.
