After being claimed off waivers from the A's in August and beating the Cubs in his first start for the Dodgers, Loaiza went 0-4 with a 10.34 ERA in his final four starts. Loaiza missed most of 2007 with neck and knee injuries, but despite having an offseason to further heal, there's no reason to count on him in 2008. He'll be in the final year of a three-year, $21 million contract, but as we saw in 2007 with now-former Dodgers Brett Tomko and Odalis Perez, you can't always rely on the "contract drive" theory.
Loaiza tried to pitch through some early season back problems and it nearly got him demoted to the minors and eventually forced him to the DL for six weeks. A six-start run in August was the only month where his ERA was under 4.91, and his performances away from two friendly home parks the past two years has been dreadful. He'll slot in as the A's third starter.
If you factor in the free agent deal he signed with Oakland, no player benefited more from RFK Stadium's forgiving dimensions than Loaiza, whose home ERA (2.86) was nearly two runs lower than what he was charged with on the road (4.71) in 2005. Relying on him to do anything more than soak up some innings is probably folly.
Loaiza was terrible in New York after coming over from the White Sox for Jose Contreras, but had an outstanding postseason out of the bullpen. He'll likely land elsewhere as a starter in 2005 and could be worth a late-round flyer but is unlikely to duplicate his amazing 2003.
After years of giving pitching coaches gray hairs, Loaiza put it all together last year, to the tune of 21 wins and 200+ K's. He swooned a bit in September, but otherwise was amazingly steady all year. Given his history it's hard to say he's a slam dunk to repeat, but if he does regress to his mean 2003 will go down as one of the all-time great fluke seasons.
Continues to tease with good stuff and 5.00-plus ERA. He was equally poor after the All-Star break and will have to take a substantial paycut from the $6 million he was paid in 2002 now that he's a free agent.
