Gentry indicated Thursday that he plans to retire, Yahoo Sports reports.
ANALYSIS
Gentry turned in a trio of multi-hit games for the Rockies' Triple-A affiliate in Albuquerque before landing on the 7-day injured list a couple weeks ago due to an undisclosed issue. The prospect of rehabbing the injury in the minors may not have been appealing to a player with more than seven years of big-league service time, so the 35-year-old called it a career. Gentry acted mostly as a reserve outfielder while appearing in 602 career games between the Rangers, Athletics, Angels and Orioles. He'll retire with a .262/.333/.339 slash line over 1,402 major-league plate appearances.

Gentry broke camp with the Orioles, playing primarily against left-handed pitching while seeing time at all three outfield spots. On June 23, after posting a meager .607 OPS in 134 plate appearances, albeit it with 10 steals, Gentry took a pitch to the ribs. He was subsequently sidelined for nearly eight weeks, returning in mid-August. Soon thereafter, Gentry was released and failed to catch on with another organization. He'll look to return to the majors in 2019, serving as a reserve outfielder/defensive replacement. He can still run. With an 18% contact rate, he can also hit for a middling average, but Gentry has a scant seven homers in 1,400 career plate appearances. If he finds work, Gentry will have some appeal as a streamer in daily leagues when you know he's playing and need to chase speed.
