ANALYSIS
Petersen appeared in major league 16 games this spring, but he did not show enough to break camp with the big club. Petersen figures to play regularly for Triple-A Colorado Springs, and will be an option if the Brewers need to call up an outfielder.

2011
Petersen thrived at Triple-A over the balance of 2012, but struggled to translate that success to the major league club with any sort of consistency. He batted .321/.380/.407 over 243 at-bats in the minors, but just .195/.272/.257 for Miami. Petersen's skill set projects as a fourth or fifth outfielder long term and after his struggles in 2012, he'll need a strong spring to warrant a look on the 25-man roster to start the season.
Petersen came into 2011 needing an impressive performance to get his career back on track and he delivered, batting .351/.434/.569 at Triple-A and turning in respectable numbers in the majors. He doesn't have the skill set to be a starter, but as a fourth outfielder he's a solid defender who can get on base and chip in the occasional steal or extra-base hit, and his spot on the Marlins' bench should be secure.
Petersen had a poor season at Triple-A and looked pretty hapless in a brief big league stint. The power he flashed in 2008 at Low-A hasn't developed, with no injuries to explain its disappearance, and without it he's got nothing to recommend him as a prospect. He needs a big year back at Triple-A to salvage his status even as a potential future bench player.
