ANALYSIS
West appeared in 39 games for Triple-A Oklahoma City in 2016, posting a 2.33 ERA and 0.93 WHIP with a 38:8 K:BB over 46.1 innings of relief. He didn't pitch professionally this past season, but will look to get back into the swing of things within the Tigers' farm system this spring. Over the course of his six-year career, West has only played in five major-league contests.

Originally drafted as a third baseman out of high school in 2007, West has been trying to carve out a role as a pitcher since making the move to the mound back in 2011. He debuted with the Rangers last season, making just three appearances in the big leagues while logging 56.2 innings between Double-A and Triple-A. Over four seasons in the minors, West has carried a 25.2% K% and 8.2% BB%, inducing outs on the ground at a decent clip (44.1% GB%). He leans heavily on his fastball (which averaged 95.0 mph in his limited time with Texas), while also working with a curveball and changeup. The Rangers will likely give him a look in spring training for an Opening Day roster spot, but it would hardly be surprising to see him return to Triple-A to finish his development in the Pacific Coast League.
West has been limited to 17 appearances, all at High-A Myrtle Beach in 2012, the past two years and missed the 2013 season due to Tommy John surgery. He returned to action in the Arizona Fall League, walking seven and fanning 10 in 9.2 innings. He's 25 years old now and has lost some crucial development time due to injury, though the Rangers valued him enough to keep him on the 40-man roster over the winter.
West has seen his stock rise since transitioning from third base to the mound. As a power relief pitcher he has perhaps opened a path to the major leagues.
