Pill served a similar role for the Giants in 2013 that he did in 2012; a power bat off of the bench. The results were almost identical to 2012, as Pill failed to produce at the major league level (.224/.272/.376). Plate discipline continued to be an issue for Pill, as he couldn't lay off of pitches outside of the zone (40.6% swing rate outside the strike zone) which resulted in a below-average swinging strike rate (12.1%). At the age of 29, it is hard to imagine Pill being anything more than what he is now; a low-average fastball hitter. He signed with the KIA Tigers of the Korean Baseball Organization to play overseas next season. He's young enough that he could return to MLB if he improves his profile in South Korea.
Pill appeared in 48 games for the Giants in 2012 after breaking spring training with the team, but he also spent a significant amount of time with Fresno (60 games). Known as a solid defensive first baseman that has the ability to play some left field, Pill struggled early in the year platooning with Brandon Belt at first base. While he managed to hit four home runs in 114 plate appearances, he looked overmatched against major league pitching. Pill chased pitches out of the strike zone at a 41 percent rate, and his BABIP of .220 was affected by an awful line drive rate (11.7 percent). He will be battling for a spot on the bench in spring training once again.
Pill was a seventh round pick back in 2006 and wasn’t thought of as much of a prospect until last year, when he batted .312 with 25 homers and 107 RBI over 133 games in Triple-A, albeit in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League. He got an audition in September with the Giants, and he responded by posting an .881 OPS, although it came in an extremely small sample (50 at-bats). Pill doesn’t project as a regular, but in part because San Francisco lacks right-handed batters, there’s a real chance he makes the team this season as a bench player.
