$Left the Angels to play in Japan in January 2015.

January 19, 2015
Herrera has been granted his release in order to play in Japan this season.
ANALYSIS
Herrera was non-tendered at the beginning of December but was then re-signed to a minor league deal the following day. Rather than attempt to crack the Opening Day roster in spring training, however, Herrera will take his talents to Japan in search of greener pastures. The 33-year-old Cuba native appeared in 20 games for the Angels last season, posting a 2.70 ERA across 16.2 total innings.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2015
2008
Herrera made his first appearance in a major league uniform since 2008 with the Angels last season, pitching six innings in April before being recalled in August for the rest of the season. He saw success in the majors, as well as the minor leagues, as he pitched to a 2.52 ERA in 50 innings at Triple-A Salt Lake, while also making 20 appearances in 16.2 innings with the big club en route to tallying a 2.70 ERA. Herrera did not allow a home run during his time with the Angels, and threw eight shutout innings in September, but his overall ratios left something to be desired, as he struck out 13 batters while walking nine. Though he had success last season, the Angels' bullpen is plenty deep heading into 2015, which may relegate Herrera, who has just 35 frames under his belt at the major league level, to organizational depth to begin the year.
Herrera was heralded as a potential frontline starter when the Pirates signed him as a Cuban defector back in December of 2006. Pitching for Double-A Altoona in 2007, the 27-year-old righty failed to impress, posting a 6-9 mark with a 4.69 ERA and 1.469 WHIP. Late in the season Herrera was throwing his fastball mostly in the mid 80's, not the 90's, as many had been led to believe. At this point, the three-year deal worth $1.9 million looms as a disappointment within a franchise that has seen more than its fair share of losing. Perhaps Herrera will continue to adapt to professional ball, but right now his future doesn't look too promising as anything more than a potential stopgap starter or middle reliever.
