Rest-of-Season Projections
Bianchi signed a minor league contract with the Rockies on Friday, Matt Eddy of Baseball America reports.
ANALYSIS
Given that Trevor Story will be the Opening Day starter for the Rockies, Colorado suddenly needed organizational depth at shortstop, prompting them to sign Bianchi. The 29-year-old has appeared in the majors each of the past four seasons, although he has been somewhat of an offensive liability. His only chance to reach the major leagues would be in the event of the Rockies infield getting plagued with injuries.

Bianchi made at least 11 starts at each of the infield positions left of first base last season, but he struggled with his bat and finished with just a .564 OPS. His best skill is an ability to play shortstop, but it's unlikely that he'll hit enough to be more than a utility player at the big league level. Nevertheless, he'll get the chance to compete for that role during spring training.
