Hernandez has filled the utility infielder role during his four-year professional career, both with the Royals and Mets. Hernandez spent most of 2010 at Triple-A Buffalo but saw heavy action in September at second base for the Mets due to injuries. Look for him to spent most of 2011 back in Buffalo.
Hernandez has filled the utility infielder role for his brief three-year professional career. He split 2009 between Triple-A Omaha and the majors while appearing in 36 games for the Royals. Hernandez is a solid defensive player that provides little else. He lacks power, does not steal bases and is a sub-.250 hitter. With the Royals having a logjam in the middle infield, it will be hard for Hernandez to win a roster spot in spring training. He should be ignored in all league formats.
From an offensive perspective, there's not much to like with Hernandez - he has no power (four homers over the last three years), doesn't run frequently and doesn't get on-base frequently enough to cash in on his speed. Yet following the trade of Miguel Tejada, Hernandez has a puncher's chance of winning the starting shortstop job, or at least part of it, competing with Brandon Fahey and Freddie Bynum.
Hernandez only has value for his glove as a utility infielder. He hit just .256 with two home runs and a .290 on-base percentage between Double-A Mississippi and Triple-A Richmond last season.
Hernandez is highly regarded for his glove but hit just .242/.314/.302 at Double-A. With just six stolen bases, there's little here to offer for fantasy purposes.
Hernandez is a strong fielder but he hit just .272/.299/.394 at high Single-A Myrtle Beach. Added to the 40-man roster in November, he'll need to show more power and plate discipline to justify moving his strong glove upward in the Atlanta system.
