Phillips’ time with the Royals organization seemed to end in December when the club designated him for assignment. He played decent defense in his nine seasons in the organization, but his average has fallen in the past four years at Triple-A Omaha from .312 to .238, and has never hit for much power. It’s looking more and more like he might be a career minor-leaguer.
Once considered a decent catching prospect, Phillips, now 30, has spent the past three seasons in Triple-A with short stints filling in for the Royals due to injuries. He's been praised for his defense but has never hit well enough to earn a major league job. The trade for Jason LaRue means he won't get that opportunity with the Royals in 2007.
Phillips has his fans within the Royals' upper management but none of them are willing to give him a major league job. His bat won't kill you and his work behind the plate is impressive. Manager Buddy Bell calls him a "student of the game." The Royals would prefer their second catcher to be a veteran to mentor starter John Buck, so Phillips will probably have to toil in Triple-A or find another team.
From rookie ball to the majors in just two seasons, Phillips’ rise was a combination of the system’s lack of healthy catchers and his success. Phillips hit .312 in 86 games in Triple-A in 2004 but rotted on the bench in Kansas City in September, getting his first start 23 days after joining the team. With Justin Huber set for Triple-A and three quality catchers set for Kansas City, it is unclear where Phillips will land.
