PColorado Rockies
June 20, 2012
Bergmann has signed with the Rockies, the team's official website reports.
ANALYSIS
Bergmann, 30, had been pitching with the Camden Riversharks of the independent Atlantic League. Bergmann hasn't appeared in the majors since 2010 with the Nationals, owning a career ERA of 5.04. Though the Rockies are in need of new blood in the rotation, Bergmann will likely have to prove himself in the minors before he would get summoned to the big leagues.

Bergmann once again couldn't translate Triple-A success into big league adequacy, and his K/9IP rate (the one thing that provided some hope he might have a future) took a turn for the worse as well. The Nationals seem to have given up on the idea of him ever being a starter, but even in the bullpen he hasn't shown enough to be guaranteed a spot in 2010.
Bergmann's fluky hit rate stayed behind in 2007 and while he still struck out batters at a decent clip, the rest of his numbers plummeted. The Nationals tried him in the bullpen but it didn't improve matters, and the only thing that might save his spot on the staff is the lack of pitching depth in the organization.
In between DL stints, Bergmann managed 21 surprisingly effective starts in 2007 thanks mainly to a reduced hit rate. The injuries perhaps shouldn't have been surprising though, as he hadn't been a full-time starter since his days at Low-A in 2004. He'll collect his share of strikeouts thanks to four solid pitches, but gives up too many home runs and lacks the one dominant pitch to make him a truly viable top-of-the-rotation candidate.
Bergmann was too hittable to be useful to the Nationals in 2006, but his Triple-A numbers were probably solid enough to earn him another chance in the big leagues. His strikeout rate hints at some potential value, but there's little reason to have him using up a roster spot to start the season.
Bergmann pitched fairly well over three levels, finishing up his season in the Nationals bullpen. A solid spring should get him back there again.
