Downs, 30, opened 2014 with Triple-A Oklahoma City, but was called up by the Astros a month into the season to fill their lefty-specialist role out of the bullpen. In 45 appearances, he tallied 10 holds and did well to hold left-handed batters in check (.208 BAA), but finished with a 5.45 ERA overall. While his 7.0 K/9 and 4.9 BB/9 both regressed compared to the year prior (9.4 K/9, 2.8 BB/9), a 4.30 FIP suggests he was a tad unlucky. Downs projects to hold a similar specialty role out of the Astros' bullpen in 2015.
The 28-year-old late bloomer carved out a role as a lefty specialist out of the Tigers' bullpen last season, finishing 0-2 with a 4.84 ERA and 1.33 WHIP in 35.2 innings. While not overpowering, Downs proved to be successful against left-handed hitters (.219 BAA) by mixing pitches and hitting his spots. Detroit declined their 2014 option on Downs, and the Astros quickly scooped him up off waivers. Downs projects to hold a similar specialty role out of the bullpen with his new squad.
Downs made his major league debut in 2012, appearing in 18 games while working out of the bullpen. The 28-year-old lefty finished the season 2-1 with a 3.48 ERA and 20:9 K:BB while working primarily in stress-free innings. He does not possess an overpowering arsenal, but Downs was able to dominate left-handed hitters (.171/.237/.158), which should give him the opportunity to earn a specialty role out of spring training.
Downs will join Detroit in spring training as a non-roster invitee. The 27-year-old lefty has spent his entire career in the minors, compiling a 49-43 record with a 4.29 ERA in 232 appearances as a starter and reliever. He'll provide Detroit with extra organizational pitching depth in the minors.
