Toronto traded Gotay to Atlanta for cash considerations Tuesday, David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
ANALYSIS
Gotay, 29, is a veteran player who can play both second and third base. He posted an .819 OPS with Triple-A Las Vegas this year, but is primarily minor league depth at this point in his career. Gotay will likely need an injury or two to see significant major league at bats.

Gotay started 2007 in the minors but was called up when Jose Valentin was inured at the end of April. After seeing minimal action, he moved into the starting lineup at second base in July and played well, but the acquisition of Luis Castillo moved him back to the bench. With Castillo signing a four-year deal to stay with the Mets, Gotay will be a utility infielder in New York.
Gotay came over from Kansas City for Jeff Keppinger and didn't show much more than what earned him a ticket out of town with the Royals. Gotay seems to have regressed after opening 2005 in the majors, and while he is solid defensively, he projects to be no more than a utility player.
Gotay excited the Royals by slamming a team-leading six home runs in spring ball, propelling him to the starting second base job. Once the season started, the fastballs weren't as plentiful, and Gotay cooled at the same time as he was exposed as a sub-par defensive player. He continued to struggle after being sent to Double-A Wichita and will need to bounce back in 2006 to get another shot at the Major League roster.
With the Royals out of the race and Tony Graffanino out with a knee injury, Kansas City used the final couple of months to try out Gotay and Donnie Murphy. Early returns on Gotay are positive. He showed nice glove work and hit reasonably well for not really being ready. He’ll enter the spring behind Graffanino and could wind up as the starter in Triple-A Omaha or as a fill-in in the majors.
