Rest-of-Season Projections
Gerut has announced his retirement from baseball just hours before the Mariners spring training opener, reports Greg Johns of MLB.com.
ANALYSIS
Gerut was in the thick of a competition for a backup outfield role, but said he wasn't mentally invested in the game anymore. "Physically, I'm fine," he said. "But mentally my reasons for wanting to be in uniform have become so thin and narrow that I refuse to disrespect the game that has provided so generously for my family by playing it in a half-hearted way. It was very clear that my capacity as a player was done, empty, finished." He is just age 33, so there is time for a return down the road, but he appears pretty confident in his decision.

Gerut was traded to the Brewers from San Diego last season and played very well after a slow start. His overall numbers aren't going to look good, but he hit .279/.343/.459 after the All-Star break while playing above average defense in both center and right field. The Brewers' center-field picture is unclear, and it's possible that Gerut could get some playing time along with Carlos Gomez. His lack of stolen bases reduces his overall fantasy value, and he's probably not worthy of a roster spot unless he's playing every day.
