Gregg Zaun

Zaun started the season in Baltimore but ended up in Tampa after the Orioles handed their catcher spot to phenom Matt Wieters. In December, he signed a one-year deal with the Brewers and was told he would be the No. 1 catcher to start the season. It's hard to expect big things out of Zaun at age 39, but he still has a little pop in his bat (eight homers in 262 at-bats last year). He's not worth a roster spot outside of NL-only leagues, especially since the Brewers have a pair of prospects in Jonathan Lucroy and Angel Salome getting closer to Milwaukee.

He'll make someone a fine backup catcher in the right situation, but it won't be in Toronto. Zaun struggled, hitting just .237, and seemed to fall out of favor as the season wore on. His days of fantasy relevance are likely gone, however, in anything but the deepest of leagues outside of a handcuff situation.

Zaun missed six weeks due to a broken hand, and while his 2007 (.242/.341/.411) would seem to be a big dropoff from 2006 (.272/.363/.462), it's nothing that a few bloop singles every month won't fix. He'll be in the final year of his two-year contract, and should see considerable playing time given Toronto's lack of a proven backup behind the plate.

Zaun posted another nice season, albeit in limited at-bats thanks to Bengie Molina hanging around. Now that said obstacle has been cleared, Zaun should be good for 400 at-bats again. Expect a good amount of walks, decent power and good run production hitting behind some big boppers.

Zaun posted career highs across the board in 2005. His playing time could be reduced in 2006, however, if Toronto remains serious about getting Guillermo Quiroz exposure. Expecting a repeat seems foolish, but Zaun has always had the skill set that makes him a solid $1 catcher.

Zaun inherited a full-time job in Toronto following the injury to Greg Myers and was adequate. He'll share the catching position with Greg Myers until Guillermo Quiroz is ready to take over the job.

Zaun is a mediocre offensive catcher with a below average arm. He's shown the ability to take a walk at the plate and efficiently handle the pitching staff behind it, but at 32 it looks as though he'll wind up finishing his career as a backup.

Zaun had surgery to repair a torn tendon in his right elbow in October. He's expected to be ready for the start of spring training, but it wouldn't be terribly surprising for him to get off to a slow start. The elbow might also explain his poor season at the plate in 2002 – a return to form is probably a good bet.
