2024 Fantasy Outlook
Olivares popped a career-high 12 home runs last season and Statcast's xHR says he should have had 17.4. The gap of 5.4 was the largest in all of baseball. Exactly half of Olivares' home runs came in September, a month during which he posted a blistering 1.047 OPS. That was after he had slumped badly enough to get sent back to the minors in August. It was a two-month stretch which essentially summed up Olivares' career so far, as he's shown flashes of big ability but the consistency and playing time haven't always been there. The Royals punted on him this winter, trading the 28-year-old to the Pirates. Perhaps a fresh start in the Steel City is what the doctor ordered. Read Past Outlooks
Outrighted to Triple-A
The Pirates outrighted Olivares to Triple-A Indianapolis on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Olivares lost his spot on the 40-man roster this past Thursday, when the Pirates called up reliever Ben Heller from Triple-A Indianapolis in a corresponding move. Before he was designated for assignment, Olivares had been optioned to Triple-A shortly before the All-Star break after slashing .224/.291/.333 across 196 plate appearances with the big club. He hasn't fared much better during his time in Indianapolis this season, producing a .656 OPS through 63 plate appearances.

Has the ship sailed for Olivares? He was up and down between Triple-A and the majors so much in 2021 they made a rule to restrict the number of times a player can be optioned in a given season. It appeared he might finally get a long look in 2022, but Olivares was in and out of the lineup before landing on the injured list with a right quadriceps strain. He later strained his left quad, necessitating another trip to the IL. All told, Olivares played in 53 games for the Royals last season, batting a healthy .286 with four homers and two steals across 174 plate appearances. He has legitimate pop and has stolen as many as 35 bases in the minor leagues. Plus, the outfielder is still just entering his age-27 season. That being said, it's difficult to tell where he stands in the organization right now. Both Dayton Moore and Mike Matheny are gone, but that does not necessarily mean Olivares will be turned loose in an everyday role.
